Roade and District

The Roade and Courteenhall Branch was first established in 1922. In later years it became known as Roade and District Branch, which included the villages of Ashton, Blisworth, Courteenhall, Gayton, Hartwell, Milton Malsor and Stoke Bruerne.

When the Branch was formed the first President elected was Major General Sir Hereward Wake, Bart, CB, CMG, DSO. He presented the Branch with a large wooden hut which was erected near the west end of Roade Church. The Branch was well supported and meetings regularly took place in the hut.

In 1947 General Sir Hereward Wake went to live in Hampshire. The Branch elected Major Hereward Wake MC, later to become Sir Hereward, as its President. He retired in 2014 after 67 years as President.

Some 50 years ago the Branch moved from the Church into a new Legion Hall which was the Location of the new Legion Club. Later the British Legion handed over responsibly to the newly formed Ex-Serviceman's Club. This club closed in 2010.

In the early years the Branch had both a Men's and Woman's Sections but in late 1980's these two sections amalgamated. Men and Woman served on the various committees with great credit.

It was with great disappointment to learn that the minutes recording the creation, activities and membership of the early years of our Branch were lost. No records of the branch prior to 1982 are available.
