Remembrance Service in Viersen-Süchteln
13 November 2016
The weather held good as the Remembrance Service was held in the cemetery-chapel in Süchteln. The German Reservists had invited our Branch to take part. Other local organisations were also present. The greeting included ‘our British friends’. The speech of Remembrance by Landrat Dr Coenen reminded everyone of the enormity of two World Wars and other military encounters since, especially as the Bundeswehr is now taking an active part in global conflicts. The speeches were beautifully interspersed with hymns sung by the choir of St Clemens church. Subsequently, at the ‘soldiers’ cemetery’, wreaths were laid at the memorial. Dick Simmons laid the wreath for our branch. A trumpet solo, the equivalent of the British ‘Last Post’, and the German National Anthem ended the ceremony. The trumpeter will also include the British National Anthem next year, when he has practiced a bit longer.
The members of our Branch present were Mr Malcolm Reed, Mr and Mrs Ken Pratt and Mr and Mrs Dick Simmons.
