Presidents Review of 2017

The Pudsey & Farsley Branch had a very productive 2017, taking part in the Pudsey Carnival, Pudsey Parish Church Fair, and the Armed Forces Day Music Festival at the Royal raising a fabulous additional £1,954.20 for the Poppy Appeal. We also carried out several Acts of Remembrance at the Cenotaph during the year for:- The 35yrs Anniversary Commemoration of the Falklands War on the 30th April, Fusilier/Drummer Lee Rigby on the 21st May, and the Centenary of the Battle of Passchendaele on the 29th July.

In addition we conducted three Remembrance Services on the 10th, 11th & 12th November at Pudsey Cenotaph and one at Farsley Memorial, all of which were well attended.  The Branch also attended the Festival of Remembrance at Leeds Minster on 10th November. The total raised for the Poppy Appeal for 2017-2018 currently stands at £22,510.14.

On behalf of the Branch, The Royal British Legion and our beneficiaries, I would like to sincerely thank all who gave up their own time to help sell poppies at the stalls, deliver boxes & tins to make this possible.  Our gratitude also to all the supermarkets, shops, pubs, clubs and schools that accept poppy merchandise for sale in their premises. We couldn’t do it without you.

I received a few complaints about our PA system failing during the last Remembrance Sunday Service.  In an effort to avoid this happening again the Branch has booked the professionals at ‘Fairbank Harding’ to provide a system and operate it this year.  On that note our Remembrance events would not be possible without the assistance of the following:- Deputy Lord Lieutenant, Leeds City Councillors, Pudsey Air Cadets & Band, 1st Pudsey Scouts, Pudsey Parish Church staff, Pudsey Police, The Royal Public House, Steve & Emma Jo Hughes, the Branch Committee and of course everyone who takes part in the parade. Thank you all very much.

Pudsey Cenotaph Missing Names Project & Somme Research Trip 2018

In preparation for the End of WW1 Centenary, Pudsey & Farsley British Legion Branch has been researching all of the names on our Cenotaph in association with Pudsey & District Civic Society. The need has been to identify the final resting places and personal histories of the people named on it.  This has now become a Heritage Lottery funded research project entitled “Pudsey and district WW1 Legacy, our community then and now”.

The aim is to have an accurate and complete database for the entire community to use.

The research into our Cenotaph names has found many eligible people to be missing from the Memorial inscriptions.  Pudsey & Farsley British Legion Branch has been able to use this research to visit and remember many of our fallen in France and Belgium in the past.  We are proposing to undertake one further research trip to commemorate those who are not named, confirming their final resting place where possible and Remembering them on behalf of the people of Pudsey and District.

We are also proposing that anyone from our Borough, not presently named on the Cenotaph, who served and paid the ultimate sacrifice, will be included on a new Roll of Honour board. This will sit astride one of the planters on the Pudsey Cenotaph plinth. This board will hold the names and dates of the newly identified members of our community, once a careful vetting process has been carried out. The unveiling to take place on the 11/11/2018.

We request from anyone with family members lost in either World War, that they believe deserving of inclusion, to submit their details to this website: http://www.pudseycenotaph.co.uk/missing-names.html
