Welcome to the Market Harborough Branch of The Royal British Legion

Working with young people

For a review of activity last year read the latest Branch Annual Report.

The Cadets

The Branch has a Youth Officer, Betty Ramsay (our Branch Secretary) who is also County Youth Officer. Contact her on 01858 434923
betty.ramsay@hotmail.co.uk. Three Cadet Units are Affiliated to the Branch.

ATC affiliation

1084 Squadron (Market Harborough) Air Training Corps in February, 2004.

It was the first unit in the County to be so linked.

Army Cadet Force Market Harborough Detachment in April 2004

ACF Affiliation

St John Affiliation

St John Ambulance Market Harborough Combined Cadet Division in July2005.

This was the first St John cadet unit in the County and one of the first in the Legion to be affiliated to a branch

As the former County Youth Officer, Brian Marshall helped other branches to achieve affiliation for their local cadet units. Betty Ramsay continues to do so. She has also arranged the affilliation of the local Sea Cadets and the district Scouts.

Our ATC unit has an award winning Band which has led our Remembrance Sunday and other parades for many years.

Their cadets and those of the ACF regularly help with the Poppy Appeal and at coffee mornings and other Branch events.

Both units were involved in the 2009 and 2010 Veterans Day celebrations.ACF at coffee morning

Cadet shield presentation

We are proud of our affiliates and at the April 2005 Branch meeting, as an encouragement to individual cadets, the ATC and ACF units were each presented with a framed certificate and specially designed shield to recognise especial merit. They and the names of the recipients will be displayed at their respective headquarters.

News of special interest of cadet activities is reported at Branch meetings, in In Touch and in the Annual Reports. Communication in the opposite direction is through their staff who are Branch members and by occasional talks by other members.

Schools

From time to time older Branch members have given talks to school children about their wartime experiences and about Remembrance and the Poppy Appeal. Most of the talks have been at the invitation of local primary schools but some were organised by the Harborough Museum.
