Market Harborough Branch

Welfare

The Branch Welfare Officer is Betty Ramsay (01858 434923 (betty.ramsay@hotmail.co.uk)

There are two Caseworkers both of whom have attended relevant National Caseworker Courses; been checked by Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) and have been issued with Identity Cards - prerequisites of working as a Royal British Legion Caseworker or Hospital/Home Visitor.

Generally cases will come from the County Office in Leicester for the local volunteers to contact the applicant and arrange a visit.  Final decisions and any awards are made in Leicester.  From time to time the Branch will be asked to contribute financially to a local case from its Welfare Fund.

Alderton HouseDuring recent years, the Team has dealt with a number of applications for holidays at a Legion Poppy Break Centre - Alderson House, Bridlington in the case of successful applicants from this area.  This can provide a break for serving and ex-Service people, their partners, dependants and carers.  It is means-tested but consideration is always given to a social as well as financial need.

Applications for financial or related assistance require the completion of a Form A to record the applicant's circumstances.  Where the individual is not in receipt of a means-tested benefit, this form will enable County Office to decide whether there is a financial need. In the County in 2011, some 296 ex-Service and dependants were helpedat a cost of £183,773.

In addition, numerous visits are made to the housebound, to those in hospital or simply to just keep in touch.  Speaking of which - the distribution of our monthly newsletter In Touch, is an important part of 'Welfare' and the Welfare Team is grateful for feedback received from the members who undertake the personal deliveries.

Another form of welfare is the Poppy Calls servicePoppy Call Van which helps those in need with small household maintenance jobs. The fitter for this area is a Branch member, John Faulks, who is also the regional senior fitter.
