World War 1 - Poetry/Recollections

Welcome to the Manningtree & District Branch of The Royal British Legion

This page has been created to record poetry, or recollections, from branch members and their families, of the First World War.

The following poem was handed to me by one of our Branch members at the February 2014 Branch meeting, and was written by his 14 year old grandson.

Silence, This Silence is so bliss,

even if we are at war in this abyss

Even if we are about to kiss

goodby to our lives and lively-hood as if they did not exist.

Silence, But silence cannot last

to lives given present future and past

the cry's of the dead cannot be heard

as if they were the mere cry's of a passing bird.

Silence, It is now Silent at the Somme

Hopes, Life's, Futures, forgotten and gone

As if they were pawns in a great chess game

and the king knocked over who's to blame?

Silence, Poppy's given left right and center

But is it enough to remember

those who fought and gave their lives

Remember to wear the poppy with Pride.

The following tune was sung, with no accompaniment  by one of our newer Branch members at the Anniversary Meeting on 8th July 2014.

On The Road to Passchendaele (Alan G Brydon/Major Gavin Stoddart MBE BEM)

There's a light that shines in Flanders

As a beacon for the brave

From the distant past it wanders

To recall the lives they gave.

And it tells each generation

To be wise and never fail

To remember those who've fallen

On the road to Passchendale.

                      CHORUS

On the road to Passchendale

On the road to Passchendale

Where the brave will live forever

On the road to Passchendale.

Come with me and I will show you

Why all war should ever cease

Take a walk among the gravestones

And your tears will cry for peace.

For their spirits walk in Flanders

You can hear their grieving wail

For the brave who laid their lives down

On the road to Passchendale.

                      CHORUS

On the road to Passchendale

On the road to Passchendale

Where the brave will live forever

On the road to Passchendale.
