 Branch Chairman's Visit to Somme & Flanders

In March our Branch Chairman, Mr Wayne McDonald, visited the battlefields of France & Flanders and paid respects to some of the men of Heckmondwike who lost their lives in WW1 and are buried or commemorated on the many memorials across those areas

Many Heckmondwike men served in The Duke Of Wellingtons Regiment as it was our local area Battalions and an integral part of the 49th Division.

Tyne Cot Cemetery & Memorial, Passchendaele,Belgium. The largest CWGC Cemetery in the world. 11,954 burials of which 8,374 are unknown and the memorial inscribed with 35,000 names of those lost in Ypres Salient from 16th August 1917

Menin Gate,Ypres,Belgium. Contains the names of 54395 Officers and men from UK, Canada, India,Australia & South Africa who lost their lives before 16th August 1917 and have no Known Grave
