Our Very Own Polar Bear

Gnr Eric Globe

Our very own Polar Bear Eric  Goble served in the 49th West Riding Infantry Division during the Second World War. He was born in Preston Hospital Little Hampton on the 20th July 1922, he was the youngest of five children, having two brothers and two sisters.

When Eric was 19 years old he was working as a plasterer on the Isle of White, and due to an administrative mix up, he missed his enlistment date much to his disappointment.

When he discovered the mix up he immediately reported for training, and found that he had to complete his basic training in 9 days.

Eric was then posted to 143 Field Artillery, as a driver signaller, 143 Field Artillery was part of the Polar Bear division.

Eric saw plenty of action in the days following D Day fighting his way across Holland and then on to Germany, he was in Dortmund when the Germans surrendered. However Eric's service didn't end there, he went on to become part of the British Armed Forces in Palestine.

When he was demobbed Eric returned to the building trade, and continued until his retirement, and chose to retire here in Gran Alacant, where he has been an avid supporter of The Royal British Legion.

Eric, we thank you for your loyal service and support !!!
