Portland stone Cross of Sacrifice with bronze sword mounted on a tiered Portland stone base, located in the war graves area of Carlisle Cemetery.

In virtually every British War Cemetery stands the classic Cross of Sacrifice.

It was one of the earliest memorial styles to appear as the surviving comrades of those who died, and later the Imperial War Graves Commission, erected visual tributes to the Fallen of the Great War.

This Cemetery hold the graves of a considerable number of those men and women who came forward at various times to serve their country in uniform.  They may have died from wounds received in battle, they may have died as a result of accidents in training, they may have died from natural causes while serving, or of illness contracted by the privations of their experience as servicemen and women.   There are  some from distant lands of the Empire and Commonwealth.  They lie here in perpetual unity with their comrades of the mother country.

Some are the graves of our allies, and some are the graves of those who were once our enemy.

Their duty is done.
