ALDBURY BRANCH NEWS

May 2022

Branch Membership: Our Branch Membership now stands at 54 with are latest member being Patrick Barr from Tring Station, who is most welcome! Patrick’s son is currently serving in Germany with the RLC. 54, represents the largest number of members for some time now and is very encouraging to see that we still not only attract but more importantly retain Branch members. We thank you for your continued support.

Poppy Appeal News:

Poppies Café opened on the last week of April. This was a “soft” opening and the first 2 days reasonably quite but the 3rd was May Day and a chaotic one for Aldbury by any standard being the first for 3 years due to national lockdowns however it proved a useful advertising mechanism for the Café apart from a serious earning day which is now regularly open Friday to Monday each week-please support Jude & Jackie in their new venture www.poppiesaldbury.com

St. Georges Day: Our luncheon proved to be a very successful event this year and was sold out. A good time was had by all and a return of £120 was raised for the Poppy Appeal.

Falklands: Commemorative lapel pins, for those who wish one, are now in stock priced at £5 each but selling fast, please speak to the Secretary or respond to this email:   RBL have announced commemorative plans which will take place around the country from April 2022 and culminate in the RBL event on 14th June at the National Memorial Arboretum in Staffordshire.

Armed Forces Day: Is on Saturday 25th June and will be similar to last year with the added advantage of Poppies Café also being open. Tring Army Cadets are once again supporting us and we hope to raise more funds for the Poppy Appeal once again. To that end we have been issued with a credit card reader, the same style as that issued over the main November collection period last year to assist our endeavours.

Legion National News:

National Officers:

Following this year’s election for National Officers and the Board of Trustees, I am pleased to inform you that we will have a new National Chair, National Vice Chair, two trustees re-elected and one newly elected, who will take up their posts following Annual Conference on the 15th May 2022.

Jason Coward has been confirmed as the new National Chair, having previously served as an RBL trustee. He has extensive board-level experience and runs his own marketing agency in Bristol. Jason takes over the role from Una Cleminson, who will step down in May after completing her full term of three years. The National Chair is an active position, leading a large board of 16 trustees and representing the Legion’s interests across the UK and internationally.

Lynda Atkins has been elected as National Vice Chair. Lynda previously served as a trustee, until stepping down in February this year. She has served in both the Royal Air Force and the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers TA. Lynda takes over the role from Joe Falzon, who will also step down in May after completing his full term of three years.

Three other trustees are also confirmed: Anny Reid and Paul Harris have been re-elected. John Boisson has been elected as a first-term trustee, having previously served on the Membership Council.

Our Board of Trustees is responsible for the charity’s overall governance, policy and work. The Board’s decisions are made within the bounds of our Royal Charter and our vision, mission and charitable objectives. Importantly, Trustees are legally and financially responsible for the decisions they make and the actions of the charity.

Britain’s Got Talent recently featured the Voices of Armed Forces Children Choir – funded by RBL as part of a family arts programme run by Never Such Innocence (NSI). The choir won the hearts of the audience and panel alike with their touching rendition of Welcome Home, a song penned by two of the children during lockdown. A montage of family photos with their serving parents accompanies the singing, and there’s not a dry eye in the house as they receive a standing ovation. Simon Cowell made a surprise visit, thrilling the choir whilst rehearsing in the Royal Military Chapel, the spiritual home of the Household Division - known as the Guards' Chapel - near St. James's Park in London. You can watch the whole show, first broadcast on 30th April, on ITV Hub (series 15 episode 4).

MasterChef: If you’ve been following the latest series of MasterChef, you’ll know that at the end of April was semi-finals week, where the ten remaining hopefuls move one step closer to their dream of becoming 2022 MasterChef Champion. What you may not know is, the contestants were catering for guests at a special Royal British Legion centenary event. Organised by the PR Team and filmed in November last year, the episode sees 30 veterans, fundraisers, beneficiaries, and staff members attend a prestigious three-course lunch at Middle Temple, London, cooked by the MasterChef semi-finalists. The episode begins in the MasterChef kitchen, with the contestants taking on an Invention Test in which they must create a dish inspired by the chicken or the egg. The MasterChef market is open, and with a larder full of ingredients to choose from, they must create a dish worthy of being put through to the next round. The six strongest cooks then travel to Middle Temple, where the special centenary event is taking place. Under the supervision of Glynn Purnell, head chef of Michelin-starred Purnell’s restaurant in Birmingham, the contestants are split into teams to deliver a three-course menu. Expectations are high as they cook for the RBL guests – all of whom have made a major contribution to the charity’s continued success, 100 years after it was founded.
